Homemade Sandwich Bread

Once you’ve had homemade bread, store bought bread just can’t compare! I’ve been making our bread from scratch for over a year now and I have a big goal to not buy any store bought bread products all of 2024.

This recipe isn’t with sourdough so it’s something you can run to the store to grab the ingredients and make today! I like to use my Kitchen Aid because it makes everything much quicker but it’s not necessary to have.

Let’s Make Some Bread!

First, you’ll want to mix 1 cup of lukewarm water with 1 tsp of sugar and 2 1/4 tsp of instant yeast. Let that sit for 15 minutes until it’s bubbled up like the picture. While this is rising, set out 1 1/2 tbsp of butter to come to room temperature.

Next, you’ll add 2/3 cup lukewarm water to the yeast mixture along with 1 tsp salt, 1 tbsp honey (or more sugar), 1 1/2 tbsp room temperature butter (cubed) and 4 cups of all-purpose flour. I use my Kitchen Aid with the bread hook to knead my mixture together until it scrapes of the sides. Once it’s done kneading, put your dough into an oiled medium to large size bowl and cover. You’re going to let it rest for 45 minutes so that it can rise.

Now it’s time for the fun part. Flour your work surface and dump your risen dough onto the flour. I like to knead it for a minute and the separate into 2 even pieces. I’m very much a visual person when it comes to this kind of thing and typing it out probably wont make much sense to you. So follow along with the photos. You want to get out as much air pockets as possible and tightly roll the dough while tucking in the edges. Once shaped, put them into 2 bread pans either lined with parchment paper or oil so the dough doesn’t stick. Cover again and let it rest for 45 minutes to rise again.

Once they have rested for 45 minutes, preheat your oven to 390F. You’re going to bake them for 25-30 minutes until the top is golden. I like to let mine sit for about 5-7 minutes in the pan and then I transfer to a wire rack to finish cooling. You can freeze one loaf while you enjoy the other! You can also melt some butter and brush on top of the loaf!

Cheers to baking your own sandwich bread! Let me know if you try it in the comments below! If you want to see a quick little video of the process, click here!
